Manifesto Hustings Press Coverage Campaigning Results Night

Redbrick

Redbrick is the University of Birmingham student newspaper. It is most famous for its inability to get articles proof read before going to print. During the first week of the campaign period, I was invited along to the RB office for an interview. Afterwards I thought the interview could be written up in two ways:

1. Damian is a genius and the best Guild President there has and ever will be ever.

2. Damian is completely insane and needs locking up immediately.

I hear the interviewer had a similar debate going on in her head. Still, here is the final interview, as printed in Redbrick #1267, 25th Feb-3rd March 05:

What would you hope to achieve as Guild President?

I would see that the Chair Club is reinstated and introduce bridge terms into lectures.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I've opened up a scheme called 'Design a Policy' which enables students to suggest items for my manifesto. I think this is an effective method of allowing them to have their say.

Why is the Chair Club so important to you?

I enjoyed the Chair Club, it was banned two weeks ago which is why I am standing for president. It is important to me and five other people too. (Mr Johnson is reluctant to answer specific questions about the Chair Club)

Do you not think it is better to pursue a policy that represents the interests of more students?

No, the Chair Club is vitally important to six people and I am representing their interests.

Why do you want to introduce bridge terms to lectures?

I don't, I want bridge references which is what I said in the interview but I don't think you quite understood. To make them more interesting and to help people learn.

How do you propose implementing the scheme?

Through campaigns and lobbying of the University. I am happy to hear further suggestions.

So there we go. They didn't use any direct quotes from me so some of the wording of the answers sounds a little odd to me. It's sort of what I said, but not quite.

Burn FM

Didn't actually bother going along to this interview. Didn't see much point since I don't know of anyone who has ever listened to it. I also was a bit behind on my PhD by this point, so thought I'd better do some work on that before the boss got angry, turned green, and ripped his pants.
