1920s 40s 60s 70s 80s 90s CHAOS 2000s Today Pollaxes The 70sAnother TragedyThere's only so long a writer can resist before introducing a love interest for a hero. His wife had been dead for just 12 months before Captain Chair's new love interest was introduced, though in an unusual move it took 10 years before any move was made to bring them together...and then she was killed off in the next issue. It seems Captain Chair was never supposed to have an easy life. A giant bridge had been errected in honour of Captain Chair. In possibly the shortest relationship ever, 5 minutes after getting together Captain's gal was pushed off the bridge by an assailant whose identity would remain a mystery for years to come (well they needed a new driving force for Captain Chair as the person who set off the bomb and killed his wife had been revealed the month before). Captain Chair, in a desperate attempt to save her, hurled his great pollaxe at the villain, missed, and struck his gal through the heart. Debate rages to this day whether it was the fall, or the pollaxe that killed her.
Thus began 2 years of Captain hating himself and the chairs and bridges he represented. Instead of protecting chairs, he set out to destory them. Many famous chair monuments were vandalised, auditoriums full of chairs were set on fire and the word WHY? scratched on the wall with broken chair legs. Captain was declared public enemy number 1 until, in a bizarre twist which if I hadn't read the issue myself I'd have though had been made up (which of course someone had, but you know what I mean), it was revealed that Captain was being controlled all this time by the same mysterious villain who had caused the death of his girlfriend. |
