1920s 40s 60s 70s 80s 90s CHAOS 2000s Today Pollaxes The 60sNew Era, New PowersAugust 1961 and Captain Chair volume 3 hit the newsstands. In the intervening years Captain Chair had settled down and married the girl he first met in vol2 #57. He had put his war memories behind him and managed to move on after Bridge Boy's death. For reasons which seemed sensible to the writer at the time, despite trying to repress his war memories, Captain had gotten himself a job as a research scientist on an army base in New Mexico. Issue 1 and 2 were basically a recap of volume 2, and it was only in issue 3 that the new material proper began and gave Captain Chair a new twist to his origin.
Captain Chair was busy moving into his new house on the base and in the middle of carrying the last chair into the dining room when the base wass rocked by the explosion of a C-bomb. Unknown to Captain Chair (I guess its not something you think to ask when purchasing furniture), the chair was made of an experimental alloy that reacted with the radiation and caused Captain Chair to bond with the alloy. This gave Captain Chair the ability to control chairs and, due to the ability to form millions of microscopic chairs from the atoms in the air, allowed him to fly.
It was only due to his previous exposure to the super formula that allowed Captain Chair to survive. His wife was not so lucky and died in the blast. This gave Captain Chair a new mission: to hunt down whoever set off the bomb and to ensure chairs everywhere were made of fully-tested materials.
