What's this? A televised Captain Chair series that is actually good? A bit of a surprise, eh? Arriving in 1992 and running for 4 seasons, Captain Chair: The Animated Series was everything The Amazing Captain Chair was not. It had action, it has character developement, it had well written and properly plotted stories. And when it arrived on TV screens it literally blew audiences away.
In it's time it earned 11 emmy nominations, winning 2. After the first year celebrities were fighting to voice characters, most of which were turned down as the creators wisely made the decision to place the story over having a big name guest star. The Animated Series was the first time Bridge Boy had ever been seen on screen and, amazingly, wasn't annoying! In many ways he was a more fully developed character than Captain Chair as he went from inexperienced side-kick to having a couple of entire episodes solely devoted to him in the final year.
Whilst the early cartoons were adaptations of comic stories, later ones introduced new villains and supporting characters - all of which soon made their way into the comic, which resulted in a huge boom in sales
Did you get the Captain Chair Secret Hideout for Christmas in '93? Only the luckiest kids, with the most determined parents, were able to get their hands on the toys as demand far, far outweighed the supply - an imbalance which continued well into 1994. More about the 90s toyline can be found here. After the series ended, a number of direct-to-video movie specials were released, which, despite being a good hours entertainment, never quite a reached the same levels of quality the series did. In 1998 the final movie was produced to mixed reviews and disappointing sales. The craze, as always happens, was over and Captain Chair fans were left with only the comic for new adventures. |
